__________ SUBJECT CATALOG — SCHLAGWORTKATALOG 75

reader find his subject, the German rules make reference from the specific
subject to the general-specific: Fermai’s Satz, siehe Zahlentheorie: Fermat’s
Satz. This practice is directly the opposite of the practice of the dictionary
catalog, which makes the synthesis by reference from the general to the
specific topic: e.g. Numbers, Theory of s. a. the various special problems,
e.g. Fermat’s Theory.

There is also a strong tendency to dissolve compound words, which
easily results in an accumulation of heterogeneous material under one
heading, and which consequently leads to confusion. One of the most
illustrating examples is the word Eisen with its hundreds of combinations.
It will easily be seen to what consequences it leads in a great catalog to
enter Eisenarbeiter, Eisenanalyse, Eisenbahn, Eisenbahntarif fe,
Eisenbahnwagen, Eisenerze, Eisenindustrie, Eisenoxyde, Eisenzölle, etc. under Eisen,
with subheadings without regard t o their individual character. There must
necessarily arise confusion.

There is a great difference between these compound words for
individual subjects and the headings with subheadings which express various
correlations and interdependence of two or more subjects treated in one book.

Such correlations most frequently occur in books having a local
reference or geographical aspect. These are books that have either a
geo-graphical unit as their proper subject, or books which have a topical subject
with a geographical limitation.

Geographical divisions such as regions, countries, states, provinces, cities,
etc, are definite and limited and in a way as individual as persons,
con-sidered from the point of view of*the subject catalog.

Following the path of least resistance it is very easy to enter any work
with a local aspect under the geographical heading, and think that the
principle of the subject catalog is saved. But the consequence of thi s
practice would be a tremendous acumulation of heterogeneous material that
would necessitate an extensive use of subheadings: Schlagwort, Neben
Schlagwort and Unterschlag wort, which it would be very hard to find one’s way
through.

This is the practice of Zürich, where the local point of view is stressed
very much. Coming to the minor details the headings tend to a vagueness
that is in direct opposition to the principles of the subject catalog.

Zedler follows Zürich, to a large extent, though he carries out the
details in subheadings more exact ly. But such headings Leipzig:
Konfektionsarbeiterinnen: Arbeitslöhne are by far concise and the one who would examine
