1° CONGRESSO MONDIALE DELLE BIBLIOTECHE E DI BIBLIOGRAFIA

ROMA—VENEZIA 1929.
Sezione XIVa — Relazioni Internazionali fra le Biblioteche.

THE INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE
RELATIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY OF
UPPSALA, SWEDEN, AND THEIR
ORGANIZATION

By

SAMUEL E, BRING, Uppsala

THE INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE RELATIONS, which the
University library of Uppsala carries on so extensively at the present day,
are a development of the literary connections mutually established
between the Swedish universities many years ago. Between 1740—1750
a similar »commercium literarium» was started between the universities of
Lund and Åbo (Finland was then Swedish territory), and also with
Greifswald, situated in the then Swedish province of Pommery, attempts were
made to bring about an exchange of publications. The material of exchange
was solely academic print, that is to say, academic programs and dissertations,
in which the scientific results of the period were principally laid down.
By means of special regulations the necessary numbers of examples were
placed at the disposition of the University, which in the beginning also
attended to the distribution of the same to the respective recipients and it
was not until early in the 19th Century, that the distribution of exchange
material was transferred to the University library.

These relations between the Swedish universities, have continued from
the middle of the 18th Century and have even been extended to the two
new high schools erected in Sweden during the latter half of the 19th
Century. At the present time, the University library is carrying ön
exchange relations with all the greater Swedish libraries and scientific
institutions, such as the Royal Library, the State-Archives, the Caroline Institute
