INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE RELATIONS OF UNIV. LIBRARY OF UPPSALA 137

ing the institutes and learned societies with which the University library
is on exchange terms, giving their addresses, as well as the publications
which the library receives in exchange from the said institutions and
societies. Ali the cards which belong to one and the same periodical or to one
and the same serial work, which are sent out by the library for exchange
purposes are kept together. All such sections or groups of cards are
ar-ranged in alphabetical order, according to the name of the publication, in
special boxes of suitable size.

On the leading card, the respective names of the exchange publications
are entered, partly in full and partly in abbreviated form, the latter serving
as signum, or mark of recognition, with which all cards belonging to the
same group are marked. The leading card shall also state the number of
those examples of the publication in question which the library has at its
disposal for exchange purposes, shewing from where or from whom they
have been received and how many are distributed. Ön the control card
immediately following the leading card, the number of every volume and
fascicle, every year or number of these publications as well as the date of
arrival and despatch is entered. The latter always corresponds with the
former because a volume or a fascicle is expedited nowadays, the same day
as it arrives and is never withheld pending the arrival of its successor.

Every institution and society, Swedish or foreign, which receives a
periodical publication, whether by way of exchange or as a gift from the
University library, has one card in each group, or if necessary, two cards,
should the first be filled up, which, in such case, are numbered in
succession. The cards of all groups are registered and arranged according to the
name of the place where the institution, society or editorship has its seat.
As a rule, the place corresponds with the postal address. Should this not
be the case, reference is made from the latter to the former. The principle
of arranging the cards according to locality has been chosen in agreement
with that system with which, since olden times, the library’s society
publications are catalogued in the University Library and put up in the
book-stacks. This system dif f ers from the American custom of arranging the
society publications according to title.

On each distribution card, in the top right hand corner, that form of
the publication’s title, which is used as signum or mark of recognition is
placed. Ali cards belonging to a certain group are provided with this mark
in case any card should go astray. Furthest to the left, is the name of the
place, whether it be the place where the institution and society is located,
