INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE RELATIONS OF UNIV. LIBRARY OF UPPSALA 139

fascicle etc. In the case of affirmative answer, the distribution card is
revised, if need be, in accordance with the above given rules and, as in
the case of the others an »Adrema» address is ordered, whereupon the
exchange relation is in perfect order. Should, ön the contrary, the answer
to the request of exchange be negative, this also is noted and the
distribution card is crossed out. If an exchange relation is cancelled, the
pro-ceedings are carried out in the same way and the »Adrema» plate is taken
out of its case and used for another address when a suitable occasion
presents itself. Those cards which have been crossed out are left in their places
and are not separated from the others. Experience has taught, that it is
more advantageous and practical to allow them to remain where they are,
as they are then easier to find and can afford valuable information in case
the exchange be reestablished.

There exists, however, a drawback to this method of distribution. It
is impossible, namely, to control immediately and only by means of the
cards whether or not the library is receiving any thing in exchange from
the foreign recipient. This deficiency may be neutralized and repaired by
the simple männer of exposing the exchange of a certain Swedish
publica-tion to a thorough investigation at suitable intervals, say, once a year, or
every other year, with the aid of the catalogue of accessions containing
received exchange print (see below). Should it then occur that the library
has not received its due, the deficiency is reclaimed. "Whilst matters are
arranging themselves, the »Adrema» plate is taken out of its case and
noti-fication of measures taken to restore order, is made ön the distribution
card. When the exchange relations have resumed their normal condition,
the plate is replaced in its case and the volumes and numbers which have
been withheld in the meantime, are forwarded to the recipient, notification
thereof being made ön the card.

It is evident from what has been recorded that the University library
corresponds directly with the institutions, societies and edititorial
managements with which it has exchange relations, without the aid of any exchange
service or »bureau d’échange». Such exchange services are organized in
some countries as for ex.: the United States of America, France, Holland,
Italy, Roumania and Sovjet-Russia, to which exchange print is usually sent
for distribution within the respective countries, which in their turn collect
their own country’s exchange print, and distribute it to other lands or
even-tually to their bureaux d’échange. No such bureau d’échange exists in
Sweden. When, in the latter half of the 19th Century the exchange of
