regard to regulär and uninterrupted exchange relations. Only now and
then and ön special occasions a printed card of thanks is sent off. If a
reclamation has been made — for which purpose printed forms are used —
the receipt of the missing item is always acknowledged.

The great comprehensiveness of the exchange relations of the
University library has necessitated, however, the compiling of a third catalogue.
In order to give a collective view of the exchange relations and a handy
catalogue concerning them, the University library has compiled one which
might be called a collective catalogue of the exchange relations. This serves
several practical purposes. If, for example, notice of change of address be
given by a society with which the University library has exchange
relations, all groups of distribution cards should have to be gone through, were
it not for this catalogue, in order to get hold of cards which have to be
altered — a somewhat time consuming work. With the aid of a collective
catalogue, however, information concerning which publications the society
in question receives from the library is immediately available and the
re-spective distribution cards are easily found for the purpose of address
alteration. Compiled ön the same lines as the distribution cards and the
accessions catalogue for periodicals, the catalogue contains only name and
address of the institution or society with which the library has exchange
relations, as well as a list of those periodicals which the University library
sends to and receives from the institution or society in question. This
catalogue consists of cards of the same form and size as those ön which the
arriving periodical exchange print is entered. The cards may either be kept
together in a special series of their own, or they may be placed in the
accessions catalogue, before those cards notifying the exchange print from
the institution or society in question. Ön the part of the University library,
no definite opinion can be given as to which of these methods is preferable,
owing to the catalogue having not yet been sufficiently tested.

There is no reason to give in figures the number of the works, or
that of the volumes, which the University library receives a year, thanks
to its comprehensive book exchanges. In order to throw light upon such
figures, one also should draw a parallel between such a number and that
of the books which have been obtained by purchase. Particulars of this
kind being unnecessary in a short general survey like this, I am going to
consider only the periodicals. In doing so, I am able to verify that more
than 2/3 of all periodicals received by the University library during the
