LOANS OF BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS __________123

Loans to and from other countries have been mediated by other Swedish
libraries of general scientific character and undoubtedly also by some of
the country ’s great public libraries but, as such loans have, as a rule,
been of a more incidental nature, thèse libraries have not been included in
the survey. On the other hand, it has been considered of interest to gather
particulars of the loan activities of a number of the greater scientific
libraries of Stockholm of a spécifie nature. Reports have therefore, not
only been given from the five previously mentioned libraries but also from
the Library of the Royal Academy of Music (music and musical litera ture),
the Library of the Academy of Letters (prehistoric and mediæval archæology
and numismatics), the State Archives (history), the Library of the Royal
Technical High-School (technology), the Library of the Royal Academy of
Science (natural science) and the Library of the Karolinska Institute
(medicine). The investigation thus includes 11 libraries. To each of these was

3. Has application been made for loan of periodicals other than in
exceptional cases?

4. State loan expenses (post, package, insurance). Has the question
of reciprocity regarding free postage come into force?

5. Has it been found, according to your expérience, either difficult or
impossible to satisfy the demands of the public regarding loans,
for example, of English or French literature?

6. Do y ou consider it advisable, in certain instances, to lend
photographie reproductions in place of originals, wether manuscript or
print?

These formulas duly filled in have been returned from each library
and a report of the same is given in the accompanying tables.

On comparing the figures as notified by the tables, one finds that loans
have been particularly considérable between Sweden and its Northern
neigh-bours (Denmark, Finland, and Norway). This was assumed beforehand and
the figures 1087 and 261, together representing the loans between these
countries, compared with the total 1253 and 435, prove that the intimate
connections which for some time past have existed between the Northern libraries,
are still going on. On the other hand, it is surprising to note that it is
