återfinner följande tillägg i texten före det kapitel som behandlar Gustav
Adolfs historia (s. 233): »Thus I have finished what I at first proposed by
giving you a short view of this ancient kingdom, and a breviate of its kings;
nor can I conclude without paying a due regard to the memory and noble
exploits of their heroic king Gustavus Adolphus; of which I have not only
been well informed by persons of credit but in part have been myself an
eye-witness.»1
Trots John Storys egna bemödanden att bevara sin anonymitet och
lames Bolers vilseledande åtgärder, har det alltså varit möjligt att utreda
författarskapet till ett par av de mest intressanta bland de skrifter som i
England ägnades »The Lion from the North», hans folk och hans bragder.2
1 Allt pekar på att denna interpolation (tiderna!) är baserad på utgivarens kunskap
om Storys liv.
2 I ett nyligen utkommet arbete, SEATON, E., Literary relations of England and
Scandinavia in the seventeenth Century (Oxford 1935) skriver författarinnan (s. 77—78):
»Seven years af ter the death of Gustavus, the demand is still so great as to justify the
continued issue of a far möre valuable treatise, A Short Survey of the Kingdome of
Sweden ... untill this present Year 1632, translated from (High) Dutch, and printed in London
in 1639.» Någon upplaga med detta årtal känner jag ej till och författarinnans uppgift
torde finna sin förklaring i det exemplar som finnes i British Museum (Press Mark 1299.
g. 20), där siffrorna 1632 på titelbladet blivit utplånade och i stället 1639 ditskrivits med bläck.
