Of artistic understanding, of interest in what is
going on on the stage, it may be that there is as
much to be found in this "proletarian" audience
which now fills the seats and boxes as there was in
most of the former gold and silk-clad ladies and
gentlemen.
While wc were thus tåken up with watching this
crowd, suddenly there stood before us our friend
Napoleon. Along with his friends he had been
looking for us in all the places of entertainment in
Tiflis, until at last he found us here. He had been
so busy making preparations for our departure next
day that he had been greatly delayed. Now com
pensation had to be made with Kakhetian wine and
music; and a small string orchestra played us a
last good-bye to Georgia’s capital in the plaintive
songs of Georgia.
