shift and skirt, while every Friday she must go to
the grave with food and drink for the dead man.
This people’s wooden vessels and cooking and
household gear seem to be like those of the old
Germans in many ways, as also their custom of
brewing beer from barley. This last is also a Khevsur
custom, but other Caucasian tribes usually brew
a Mnd of millet-beer.
The fact that many of the Ossete ways and
customs, and many of their implements, have great
likenesses with those to be found among us northern
Germans is probably in part owing to a common
Indo-European origin ; but, of course, it may also
be a result of a sameness of life and its conditions.
It is to be noted that many like customs are found
not only among their neighbours, the Khevsurs and
Pshavs, but also among other tribes ofquite different
origin and speech.
