cosmic forces in the abysmal depths and on the
surface—by the mighty buckling of the earth’s
crust, by volcanoes and their fiery streams, by the
poised glaciers, by the splintering strength of the
frost, by the thundering avalanche, by the rushing,
wearing masses of water. Gladly would wc have
spent days, nights, and weeks in this untamed
nature on so vast a scale, high up there above all
the struggles and pettiness of earthly life.
