TO DAGHESTAN
At four in the afternoon the tram left Vladikavkaz,
and after half an hour on the short branch line wc
were at Beslan, which is on the main line from
Moscow to Petrovsk and Baku. Wc had to wait an
hour and a half for our tram to leave at 6.9 p.m.
I spent the time watching the village market just
by the station, where peasant women were seiling
fruit and food : roast fowls, cutlets, bread by weight,
and so on. There was a lively traffic, as people were
just buying food to take home for the evening. My
attention was particularly drawn by a young and
beautiful woman who stood there offering her
grilled cutlets on a dish, and had a little son with
her holding a dish with roast fowls. She may well
have seen better days, but she patiently bore with
men coming and taking up the cutlets to look at
them, and then, håving asked the price, putting
them back without buying, though some did. The
fowls, too, were felt and pinched and put back. It
was painful to watch, but at last she got rid of one.
Farther down the street was a tombola, with a
woman standing by the round table. Around the
edge were all kinds of small things, such as pocket
handkerchiefs and the like. You paid so many
kopecks, spun a pointer round in the middle of the
table, and the thing opposite which it stopped you
fook. There was an eager crowd round this table of
fortune.
