One was struck by seeing women standing here
to trade. It was in marked contrast to the world wc
had come from, where they are seldom seen, even
in the Tiflis market-place, and where all trading,
both in the market and in the bazaars, is carried
on by the men. Wc were once more in Russia.
Then the express came, and wc went eastwards
over the plain. Wc got places in the international
wagon-lit, and it was like being back in Europe again.
At two in the morning (Tuesday, 7th of July)
wc reached Petrovsk, or Makhach Kala as it is
called now, after one of the martyrs of the Soviet
revolution. This town Hes on the Caspian Sea, and
is the capital of the autonomous republic of
Daghestan. Wc were cordially greeted by the presi
dent of Daghestan himself, Samursky, and by
Korkmazov, the president of the government (the
commissariat) . Wc were driven in motor-cars to
President Samursky’s house, where his wife offered
tea and refreshments. Wc were, indeed, welcomed
with all the hospitality characteristic of these
mountain peoples. The president and his wife,
besides his one large office and reception-room, had
only three rooms to live in, and one of these, with
two good beds, was now given up to Quisling and
myself. After our long eventful day wc slept like logs
in this new world wc had now come to.
