beaten by the rugged Hadji Murad. Shamyl once
more tried to take the town, but soon had to turn
against the Russians, who were advancing from
other directions. In the end, in October 1834, he
was defeated by the capable and brave general
Kliike von Klugenau, who took Gotsatl and the
important a-ul of Gherghebil, where the Kara
Koisu and the Kasikumukh Koisu meet. Shamyl
for the time being had to give up the thought of
winning over the Avars, the strongest of all the
mountain tribes in the Caucasus ; but he made use
of the time in making his power secure, and in
binding together the followers of Muridism in the
other parts of the land and in Chechnia, so as to
strengthen the confederation against the Russians.
These last made the so fateful mistake of bringing
in the Kasimukhian Akhmed Khan from Mekhtuli,
as provisional Khan of Avaria; he was the deadly
foe of Hadji Murad, and by so doing they estranged
the latter.
In March 1837 Shamyl succeeded in utterly
destroying a Russian force near his headquarters
at the a-ul of Ashilta on the Andian Koisu, near
where it meets the Avarian Koisu. A fresh Russian
anny marched in in May under the command of
General Feze ; Ashilta was tåken on the o,th ofJune
and utterly destroyed, and so, too, a few days later
the strong a-ul of Akhulgo near by.
But at this same time Shamyl was fighting the
Russians at the strong a-ul of Tilitl in the mountains
south ofKhunsakh. Feze hastened thither to support
his countrymen. With the help of their artillery
