Dakhadayev. On the other hand, there was a
strong anti-revolutionary Mohammedan movement
under the imam Gochinsky, the most important
man in the religious body, and one who had
great influence in the Avar and Andi districts. At
first he worked with Kerensky, but soon broke off
all relations with him and stood opposed to Russia.
In September 191 7 he was fighting together with
his followers against the Russians, and his com
mander, Uzun Hadji, quickly captured the Avar,
Andi, and Chechen territories.
During the Bolshevist October revolution Dagh
estan was separated from Bolshevist Russia by the
Don and the Kuban districts, which were anti
revolutionary, and Gochinsky was then the strongest
man there. He declared ghazavat (the holy war)
against Armenia, and also sent his forces against
Baku. But at that time the power in Baku had
come into the Bolshevists’ hands, and they drove
Gochinsky’s anny back. The Red anny of the
Soviet government also took Petrovsk and Shura.
In August 191 8 Petrovsk was tåken by the ad
venturer Bicherakhov, supported by the British.
The position of the Soviet Government in Shura
was then a difficult one, threatened as it was by him
from the south, by Gochinsky’s Chechen bands on
the other side, and from Azerbaidjan by the
Turkish anny, which took Baku in September.
In November 1918 the Turkish anny defeated
Bicherakhov, and took Petrovsk and Shura. A
new so-called democratic (Menshevist) government
was then set up in Daghestan, to which Gochinsky
