The forefts of Lapland produce, in ‘great perfection
the fpruce and filver fir. Another fpecies has lately been
difcovered here called the Mazar-tree; it is a tall, thick
and ufeful timber. The Bole when cut in two is beauti-
fully variegated, and hard enough to take an excellent
polifh.. Fables. of great beauty, and other ornamental
furniture have been made of this wood, which is pur-
chafed for this purpofe by the Swedes and their northern
neighbours. .

Lapland too has its flowers, which during its fhort
fummer flourifh in the vallies. This country in general
is very mountainous and barren; the fituations on its
Lakes, however, and in the interftices of its Hills are
pitturefque and beautiful, But there are extenfive for-
efts dark and difmal, long and dreary plains, covered with
mofs, and fwampy; the profpett of which cannot but
