Läsebok N:o 20—22.

23. Illness. (Dialogue the 4th.)

A. How is your son? I have not seen him this
morning, and he is generally the first to welcome me.

B. He is, I am sorry to say, somewhat unwell; so much
so, that we have been compelled to call in medical advice.

A. Indeed. 1 am grieved to hear that — but I trust it
is nothing dangerous.

B. At present the physician is unable to say anything
certain about him; but he has ordered him to be perfectly
quiet, and to be very carefully watched.

A. Can you account in any way for his indisposition ?

B. That is what puzzles me — though it is possible
that he may have taken cold on Monday evening; you know
we went to Richmond, and returned somewhat låte by water.

A. And yet the weather is so warm now, that I should
have thought it almost impossible. Did he complain of
feeling cold at the way home?

B. On the contrary, he seemed to enjoy the trip
amazingly, and was in the highest spirits — but you know, there
is a great deal of illness about now, especially fever.

A. Has he ever had scarlet-fever?

B. Yes, and the measles and hooping-cough; but,
perhaps, after all, it may be nothing more than a cold; he is
more subject to colds and influenza than any of our family.

A. And yet the time of year scarcely warrants the
supposition. When did he first complain of feeling unwell?

B. Yesterday morning, when he came down to
breakfast, he complained of having passed a bad night, and seemed
to be suffering considerably from a racking head-ache, which

continued to get worse until the afternoon, when we
persuaded him to go to bed.

A. It was a great pity he was allowed to get up
at all.

B. Yes it would have been better for him to have
remained in bed altogether; but he hoped that by getting
to his usual work he should forget it.

A. Ay, that’s a bad plan, but a very common one
with young people — illness is not so easily forgotten; but
I hope soon to hear that he is quite recovered. You will
not fail to let me know as soon as there is a change, one
way or the other?

B. You may rely upon my doing so, and I trust, I
shall be able to send you a favourable report.
