Miss Locke. How is it played? I forget.

Clara. All stand in a circle, then the ring is put on a
long cord, and each one holds the cord with both hands. One
person stands in the middle, and is to try and find the ring,
which is being passed from one to another, but all must
move their hands, to pretend they are passing it.

Fanny. It is great fun to see the one in the middle,
jumping from side to side, thinking he shall find the ring.

Clara. We cau play at fox and geese, and George shall
be the fox.

Fanny. And you must be the goose, Miss Locke;
because you are light and nimble. Do you remember the last
time we played it? It lasted for half an hour, and the fox
could not catch one of your goslings.

Clara. And then at the last will come the forfeits.

Miss Loclce. As there will be several boys, could they
not play cricket or some boy’s game in the garden, while the
girls amused themselves in-doors? I mean for the first hour.

Clara. Oh no, Miss Locke, let us play all together, it is
only half the fun, if the boys are not with us.

Fanny. Why cannot we all play croquet?

Miss Locke. To be sure we can. It is the very thing,
Fanny dear. We must look for the battle-door and
shuttlecock, and that very large india-rubber ball, because some of
the children are too young to play croquet.

Clara. We have a bat and ball, and hoops and sticks,
but I do not know where they are.

Miss Locke. Well then; suppose we go at once, and
look for all these things, so as to have everything in readiness
to-morrow.

46. Mr. and Mrs. Montague. Miss Locke, Fanny
and Clara. (Dialogue the 10th.)

Mrs. Montague. I have come to beg for a holiday
today, Miss Locke. Do you think you can grant it?

Miss Locke. Very willingly. I have had two such
industrious pupils lately, that I am very glad for them to have
a day of recreation.

Mrs. Montague. Well then, children, go and get ready,
we are going to drive to the sea, so dress yourselves
accordingly. The carriage will be at the door in a quarter of
an hour.

Fanny. W7e will put on our thick double-soled leather
boots, Clara, then we need not fear getting wet feet.

Clara. And our blue muslin dresses, they will be cool.
I know it will be a very hot day.
