have laid the cloth. Very nicely indeed. Every thing
is-straight.

Clara. That is Fanny’s doing; I suppose I had put all
the knives and forks crooked, for 1 saw Fanny arranging
every one of them. Dear old Fanny, she was orderly from
a little child, mamma says.

Fanny. If you hold the mustard pot in that way, Clara,
the mustard will run out on to the table-cloth. Put the
saltcellars farther on the table. Here is the vinegar-cruet.

Miss L. But there are no spoons on the table. Where
have you put them, Clara? I think I saw them with the
forks.

Clara. Yes, I forgot them, here are four table-spoons,
six dessert, and six tea-spoons. We shall not want
teaspoons.

ianny. I suspect John has brought the coffee-machine
with him, and then we shall be glad of them. I hear the
rattle of carriage wheels. They’re coming!

48. Khalbi and the Cat.

Some time ago a friend of mine

O

Possessed a dog and cat.

Now Khalbi was the doggy’s name,
The cat’s — I know not what.

This Khalbi loved a game of play
As well as you or I;

And many a time to tempt the puss
And play with her he’d try.

The both would gambol underneath
The table — everywhere,

A basket for waste paper was
A special plaything there.

Puss in the papers skipped about,
And Khalbi rushed around,

Till basket, puss and papers all,
WTere strewn upon the ground.

And puss would lie upon a rug,
(She wisely did and well),

Where, when the sunshine lit the room,
Some sunbeams always fell.

There, while she lay with half-closcd eyes,
Soft purring with delight,

He would run round her full of fun,
And pat her left and right.
