you can rest a little on each
landing, if you get out of
breath. There is also a kitchen
entrance, which the servants
use, and where parcels are left.
If I have forgotten my
latchkey, I must ring the bell for
the maid to open the door
(let me in). I hang up my
hat and coat in the hall, and
put my stick in the stand.
Our little flat consists of
three rooms and a kitchen.
The two front rooms are very
sunny and warm, but the back
room is rather dark. We
open the windows two or three
times a day to air the rooms
thoroughly, as we like plenty
of fresh air.
There are fire-places
(porcelain stoves) in every room.
We have not central heating.
In the dining-room we have
the dining-table in the middle
of the room, and the chairs
are placed round it. As you
enter the door, the sideboard
is on the right hand side.
Opposite, is a sofa and two
armchairs covered in leather.
A large electric lamp with a
pretty shade hangs from the
ceiling. The floor is covered
with a grey carpet, and on the
walls hang a few pictures and
a clock, which keeps very good
