Long white curtains are hung
up at the windows.
My brother and I sleep in
the back room. The furniture
is very plain: two beds, a chest
of drawers with a looking-glass,
a wash-stand with a towel rail,
and a couple of chairs.
Opposite the window is the
writing-table. To the right,
book-shelves with the works
of Strindberg, Selma Lagerlöv,
Heidenstam, and other
well-known authors. I am a great
reader. My favourite author
is Shakespeare. I only wish
I could read his plays in
English, but until I am more
advanced in the language I
use Hagberg’s translation.
There is no play in the world
like Hamlet. Of course, I also
read the newspapers. I am a
liberal (conservative, socialist),
but we also take in (have,
subscribe to), a conservative
(socialist) paper. The
subscription is 50 kronor a year.
When my mother was alive,
we had a piano, but afterwards
we sold it, as none of us can
play very well. I am not at
all musical (I have no ear for
music). My cousin John plays
the piano, the flute, and the
