When writing a formal letter
to a stranger (on business etc.)
you begin with: Dear Sir, or
Sir, Dear Madam, or Madam,

remember me very kindly to Mrs.

When adressing a letter to a
gentleman you write »Esq.»
after his name (Robert Hill
Esq.). Write »Mrs.» or »Miss»
If the letter is to a lady. (Mrs.

eldest daughter). Use »Mr.»
or Messrs.» only when writing
business letters (Messrs.
