Anm. As står ibland i st. f. as if (as though), t. ex. He looks
as he had seen a ghost. - Däraf uttrycket as it were (liksom, så att
säga). I flere uttryck såsom: I think, I hope, You know, it seems
(inskjutna satser), utelämnas vanl. as, t. ex. His parents, you know, are
dead.
Anglicismer: As you love your life, be gone (så visst som du
älskar ditt lif -)! As I live. As big again, en gång till så stor. Twice
as much. As yet, ännu. As for me, hvad mig angår. As for instance,
såsom till exempel.
5) The - the, ju - dess (desto), t. ex.
The more I see him, the less Ju mer jag ser honom, dess
I like him. mindre tycker jag om honom.
The sooner, the better. Ju förr, dess hellre.
Anm. The amusement was the more pleasing, as it offered
itself so unexpectedly (så mycket mer - som). So much the more (less,
worse). So much the better (l. all the better).
6) That kan utelämnas, då det inleder en subjekts-
eller objektssats, t. ex. It is natural he should think so.

Anm. 1. That (och when) utelämnas äfven ofta efter sådana ord
som time, moment, t. ex. the very moment you arrived. The last time
we met.
Anm. 2. Genom utelämnande af that komma flere adverb att
begagnas såsom konjunktioner, t. ex. Our steamboat came up directly
this had left (strax som, just som). Now thou art gone - (nu, då-).
7) Lest, »på det att icke», motsvarar sv. »att» efter
ord, som uttrycka fruktan, t. ex. I feared lest you should
lose your way, jag fruktade, att du skulle gå vilse.
8) When, »då», »när», while, »medan», as, »i det att»,
»då», t. ex. When a prisoner first leaves his cell, he cannot
bear the light of day. When the prisoner first left etc. (Jfr
ty. wenn, als, fr. quand, lorsque). - While the world lasts
fashion will continue to lead it by the nose. (Jfr ty. während,
fr. pendant que). - He laughed as he looked at me. (Jfr
ty. indem, fr. comme.)
