195. Om bestämningarnas ställning i förhållande till
hvarandra och till satsens hufvuddelar:
A. Attributet.
1. Adjektivet sättes efter det bestämda ordet, då adjektivet
själft har en längre bestämning (i synh. måttbestämning),
eller egentl, utgör en del af en satsförkortning, t. ex.
We had to cross a brook about fifty feet wide (en omkr.
femti fot bred bäck). Most of the bishops present took the
same side. We tried all means possible.
Efter subst. sättes sålunda vanl. present, past, adjacent, preceeding,
previous, imaginable, possible, following m. fl.
Anm. Äfven då adjektivet föregås af so eller står i superlativ
(med most), sättes det ofta efter sitt substantiv, t. ex. A vicinity so
dangerous (så farligt granskap). Secrets of a nature the most delicate
(den mest grannlaga art). - Märk äfven: A story both false and
malicious (en både osann och elak historia). A man neither rich nor
liberal (more rich than liberal).
Anglicismer:
The prince royal (kronprinsen). The prince regent (prinsen regenten).
The theatre royal. The heir apparent (närmaste arfvingen).
The heir presumptive (aflägsnare). The States General, Postmaster
General. Lieutenant General o. s. v. Ambassador extraordinary. A court-
martial (krigsrätt). A letter patent. A knight errant. The body politic
(samhällskroppen). Milton’s Paradise Lost. Asia Minor. - With one’s
eyes open (med öppna ögon). From time immemorial in. fl.
I följande uttryck, kan attributet stå fore eller efter hufvudordet:
God Almighty. The Sunday following. Monday next. The house
opposite. Chapter the first. Act the second. Part second. Verb passive.
Pronoun relative o. s. v.
2. Bestämda artikeln samt possess, och demonstrativa
pronomen sättas efter all, both, half och mångdubblingstalen.
(double, triple etc.), t. ex. All the inhabitants of this town
are poor. All the danger, hela faran (i förevarande fall).
Both my brothers, mina båda bröder. Half my fortune.
They were surrounded by triple their number. - Så äfven:
Dr Johnson, all whose studies were desultory -.
