VI.
Statement, made by Anders Shogren, member of the

Bishop Hill Colony in Henry County.

State of ’Tllinois

Anders Shogren being duly sworn depose and says, that he
has been a member of the Bishop Hill Colony in Henry County
and that he during the time he was a member of said Colony
heard preaching by Jonas Olsson the leading preacher and the
other preachers at Bishop Hill sitting forth as a doctrine of the
Bible, that the mariage relation was an unchristian relation : that
relation belonged only to those, who lived under the law of
Moses and to the heathens, but was condemnatory to true Christians.
On this ground the mariage vas not. only forbidden those who
wanted to become Christians in hits scriptural sence, but those
that ware already married, could no longer continue in the
natural generation as they truely would fall from the grace of God.

The deponent further says, that the preaching at Bishop Hill
especially the preaching of Jonas Olsson, the leading preacher,
was accepted and considered as the rule for the Colony and that
the test of the membership an expultion from the Colony was
exclusivly dependent on submission to the preaching at the
Colony.

The deponent further says that he several times asked the
leading preacher, Jonas Olsson, and other preachers to be joined
in marriage, but was denied permission on the above mentioned
ground, and for the reason, that if the females should marry, they
could not perform their work out doors, such as the costumary
done in the brickyard, stableyard, hogard any on the field.

In conclution the deponent says, that he and eight others were
expelled from the Colony on the Y7th of May A. D. 1855, because
