Statement, made by Jonas Westlund, concerning him and
his wife, both members of the Bishop Hill Colony in
Henry County “).

During the summer A. D. 1855 Jonas Westlund did not
possessed the mind to believe the preaching at Bishop Hill, “that it
was contrary to the will of God that husband and wife should
live together as such“. I made my statement to the chief
preacher at Bishop Hill Jon Olsson concerning this. At the same
time we were crowded in our room, and I spoke to Olof
Stenberg to get toom. Said Olsson and Stenberg then spok to me
concerning religion, and I began to consider if I should again
believe the preaching, and they began to have some hope of me.

They then questioned me, “if I had the strength to move to
an other room and have my wife where she was“. I moved and
left my wife and child in their room. Few days after said Olsson
to me, “it is best you take care of your child, because your wife is
from her senses.“ — If the took the child and left it with my
sister. So we lived few weeks; I in one room, my wife in an
other and our child with my sister, but as our child longed
for me, I asked permission to move to our child, which at last
was permitted. My wife came then to take our child and took
it out af my arms, but Jon Olsson and Olof Åsberg (an other
preacher) took hold of my wife and hold her, whereupon she
left the “child“ to me. Olof Äsberg Sard to me vbhattik did: not
know how bad my wife ware, and that I for such a reason “had
not been harsh enough against her“. My wife called me to her

’) Ofvanstående vittnesmål var lämnadt till en amerikanare af Jonas
Westlund, men då Westlund blifvit förledd att återgå till Bishop Hills
troslära, har han försökt att återfå denna handling. Dock stannade originalet hos
Norberg.
