Bevis för falska “statements“, begagnande af Bishop Hill

mot E. U. Norberg.

State of Illinois
Henry County /

Erik Hast, beeing duly sworne doth, depose and says, that on
the day before yesterday the deponent was present, when Eric U.
Norberg had a conversation with Vincent Ayers, in relation to an
artiele sigoned by Henry W. Wells, and said Viåcent Ayers, George
F. Wilson, Richard Maskall (and others), and published in Chicago
Daily Tribune, the 4th instance as a reply to a statement, made
by Eric U. Norberg and others, published in said Tribune of the
19th November last; in regard to some difficulty at Bishop Hill in
this County, in which conversation said Vincent Ayers denied to
have signed said reply and that he ever seen the same either in
Wwriting or in print before said Eric U. Norberg, in my presents
presented the Chicago Tribune of the 4th inst. The deponent
further says, that said Vincent Ayers said that all that he know about
the “reply“, was that said Henry W. Wells once asked him, if he
could state, that the Trustees at Bishop Hill in their dealings with
said Vincent Ayers had observed the rules of moral honesty, to
which said Vincent Ayers answered “yes“.

Yesterday the deponent was present, when said Eric U.
Nor’ berg asked Richard Maskall if he said signed his name to said
“reply“, reffered to above, to which said Richard Maskall
answered “no“, and said, that some time ago he met said Henry W.
Wells in Cambridge and was told by said Henry W. Wells, that
a statement had appeared in print against the leaders of te Bishod
Hill Colony, and that some Citizens of Henry County had made
a reply to the statement and that the name of said Richard
Maskall had been signed to said reply. To this said Richard Maskall
made no answer. Some time after he (Maskall) sow said Henry
W., Wells and Thomas Davenport and the reply was read to him,
whereupon said Richard Maskall said: “I suppose it will have to
