million marks’ worth of insurance policies in Finland,
and 120 millions in other countries. Their insurance
fund was 17 million marks, and their books show a
decrease in business in other countries. The total
amount of insurance policies in Finland in 1895 was
worth 105 million marks. The Finnish companies
have 56 per cent. of the business; and nineteen
foreign, mainly Swedish, companies have the balance
of the reported business between them. The Russian
companies are here, too, not bound to furnish reports.
The life insurance was only 78 marks per head of the
total population, and only 40,000 persons were
insured; that is to say, it is still only the middle-class
who insure their lives. The amounts per head are,
however, decreasing, which shows that life insurance is
becoming more popular. Life insurance is controlled
by a Government Inspector, but no such supervision is
yet introduced for fire insurance. Altogether, insurance
business is increasing, although not yet so well
developed as is the banking system.
