INTRODUCTORY REMARKS.
T is considered that a few words of introduction
al are called for in a collection of translated tales,
such as the accompanying, as original English
children’s books already exist in ample abundance
for all demands. It has been found both in Sweden,
their home, and in Germany, where they have
emigrated to, that the tales of Richard Gustafsson
have afforded incessant pleasure to young folks,
on account of both their freshness and their deli-
cacy of conceit—two most desirable qualities in a
book for children, who, after all, are very often as
shrewd and exacting critics as their elders. The
author of these stories is eminently skilful as a
child’s tale-teller—he unites true simplicity of
diction with a vigorous style, and inculcates a
