masses of cloud. In fact, we all pay for one another —
and every bill drawn ön the human species, if paid by any
one, is paid for all. It is an appropriation which
becomes possession because it cannot be truly
appro-priated without entering the soul of the acceptor and clearing
off his debt and doubt. It is the di vi ne béarn of truth
and 1 o v e witli which the redeemed soul finds itself
con-genial and expands itself into happiness and peace. — We
s e e that much is performed in this way — in fact, everything,
I will not say g r e a t, but puré, lovely, disinterested, a n g e 1 i c
if you like — for the ängels of humanity are great in small
things also. But we f e e 1 that much möre is performed in
this way — much möre than our poor understanding can
comprehend. For undoubtedly we not only a c t for one
another, we also — and perhaps still möre — suffer for one
another. (C’est pourquoi les anciens ont dit que le malheur
est sacré.) We cannot see all the links that connect the
whole and make all action and suffering a common stock; but
we f e e 1 that every suffering, meekly born, is the indication
of the inherent ängel in humanity and turns into balm for many
an aching wound.
— Make of this what you can! — I am at the end of my
’ paper. — Take the S a v i o u r as the Pharos of this ocean
of mercy, as the example, the personification of all this, and
not only as a token and symbol, but take him as a person,
as the true r e v e a 1 e d man — and you will feel that
for mankind to accept him as a Saviour it is above all
necessary that m a n shoulcl be merciful, kind and loving and
that we should all be saviours to one another. And
