3# THE SKJUTS-BOY.

A_s the car# was too small for all of them, the skjuts-boy was
prevailed upon, ibr a small sure of money, fo walk, and Ivar
conducted the carriage. That he might not crowd the tender
lady, he squeezed himself as closely as possible fo the side of the
cart, and as soon as everything was arranged, and the dog stowed
away under ]:var’s ïeet, they continued their jom’ney.
During the whole ride, the lady did no# speak, excel)t once,
when Ivar praised the beautfful dog, she said that iç had been
offered for sale, by some one who was in great wan#, and was
obliged fo sell it.
".Alas! that was too bad," said Ivar, and felt the utmost com-
passion for the one, although unknown to him, who had shared
the saine rate with hîm. lie thought of his pony, and kep# a
continued silence, ye# could not refrain from bendh#g do#wa occa-
sionally and patting the little dog.
Y#’hen the car# stopped ai the dirty and disgusting-looking
tavern af Swarteborg, a visible tremor affected the young lady.
lier look met Ivar’s eyes, with that saine unspeakable expres-
sion of gratitude that she had given him whcn he offered
services.
"_&re you now obliged to leave m##" said she, sorrowfully.
Ivar was transported with inward joy ai the kind words, and
when he heard that if was the landlord’# turn fo ïurnish the horses,
he offered to drive instead of the servant, lie would only run
home quickly, and inform his parents, and return in a moment.
"Do not stay away too long," said the stranger, entrcatingly,
and with a look of disgus# entered the smoky and dirty room.
Ivar almost flew over the well-known forest path, hardly
taking rime fo bestow a friendly look upon his pony’s gTave.

hand over the money which he had received for the hide, and to
