CHAPTER V.
GREAT CONFUSION CREATED BY MRS. BRUN’S CAT.

01# the evening of the fourth day of lais journey, Ivar stel#ped
through the door of his paternal home, and the many questions
#vhîch were asked him, seemed as though they would bave no
end. But Ivar was weary, and begged them to allow him fo
sleep fil-st, ttis Iaother prel»ared a bed of straw, and covered if
with a coarse but warm blanket, obtaîned a new pillow case,
and satisfied with these prcparations, Ivar laid himself down,
and was soon sound asleep, dreaming of the beautiful pale lady,
and ber child with its bandaged eye. As ho saw them now in
his dreams, so he saw them after a lal3se of many years, and little
Diana remained a pledge fo him, that accompalfied him every-
where. If was a chain of connexion which served fo prove fo
him that his memory had hot been a dream.
After Ivar had related the particulars of his journey fo the
l#orwegian frontier, and had patiently suffered hiz mother’s
reproaches, that he had brought along with him another hungry
mouth fo fill, the most important subject, the l#roposal of Master
Brun, was discussed.
"What is your opinion, Ivar ?" said his father, who sa# on the
table, twirling his thumbs. "What do you think? you shall
hOt be forced fo do if; but I think it as good as anything
else."
« If you do go, you can corne over and see us on Sundays, and
other holidays," said his mother, drawing ber chair nearer fo his
father, so as to œearticipate in this importan# conversation, and in
ber husband’s authority.
