CIIAPTER X.
THE HEIGIITS OF SWARTEBORG.#ARR[VAL AT STROEMSTAD.
AT the hotel in #5ddevalla, De Dressen inquired whether a
traveller, accompanied by a boy, stayed there over night, or
whether he was there yet. :But nobody pretended to bave seen
anything of such a person.
"If I only knew what direction he was gone," said the
lieutenant-colonel to himself; but was soon interrupted by a
waiter, #vho inquired with great humbleness» "Whether his grace
did hot wish his horses ordered for the whole distance. This
rnight be easily done, as a carriage was just departing, if his
grace would only write a post-ticket, and give if fo the servant
who was travelling with the carriage."
This proposition obtained great praise from the lieutenant-
colonel, tIe knew that if would cost him a little money for the
servants, but if gave him a certain kind of authority, if he tra-
velled with horses ordered in advance; and nothing was fo be
neglected which might foster his great ambition, tte therefore
wrote a post-ticket in large, distinct lettcrs- "Two horses for the
:Lieutenant-colonel and Chamberlain de Dressen, .Mpp/" But af
none of the foolish things which he had committed in his life was
he so angry as at this; for he was detained upon the heights of
Swartcborg by the insignificant circumstance# that the splendid
carriage which he had obtained ibr twenty dollars, rix-money,
suddenly lost one of ifs fore-wheels, and upset the #vhole family,
fo their amazement and great anger, upon the high road, by
which occurrence they might bave easfly broken" both their bones
and necks into the bargain.
