CHAPTER XXX.
THE LIEUTENANT-COLONEL LOOKS UPON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF
THE PICTURE.
THE remainder of the fall passed away, under the influence of
a kind of general eclipse of the sun, in consequence of which the
whole çamfly suffcred. The days gmdually became shorter, the
roads grew #vorse, and no stranger appeared fo interrupt the
monotony of Tunefors, with a very few exceptions. :Not even
the friendly l#Iina round leisure fo visit ber friends : for she v¢as
very busy in preparing for ber wedding, that #as to take place
upon New-Year’s Day; and thus with gloomy feelings our
accluaintances af Tunefors looked forward toward Christmas Eve.

colonel, in a soft, almost bewailing tone, as he was walking fo
and fro in the room with a pipe in his mouth; "but all hopes

"Let us forger what bas passed, dear husband," said M:adame
de Dressen, consolingly. "Let us dafly enjoy what we bave now
–health and a good rice-pudding."
"And genuine tea," exclaimed Amelia, laughing, as she thought
of the artificial tea of that unfortunate supper.
"But hot even a dog or a car to keep us company,"* replied
the lieutenant-colonel, peevishly.
"We shall enjoy what we bave, dear papa, so much the
