I shall quote one more passage from the same
letter:—
‘Your sister sent me as a Christmas gift, an
article by Strindberg, in which he proves, as
clearly as twice two make four, that a female
professor of mathematics is a monstrous thing,
a nuisance, most unpleasant and unprofitable.
After all, I think he is right; I only protest
against the idea that Sweden possesses a
large number of mathematicians superior to
myself, and that I have only been elected from
motives of gallantry.’
