it appeared that she was not only dreadfully
spoilt, but exceedingly ignorant for a girl of
twelve; she could not even write her own
language properly.

And worst of all, it came to light that the
French governess was given to a vice so ugly
that it could not be mentioned in the children’s
presence.

A sad time followed; Tania remembered it
dimly afterwards as a kind of general domestic
misery. In the nursery there was nothing but
rows and tears. All quarrelled, all were scolded,
the innocent as well as the guilty. The father
was in a temper, the mother in tears. Njania
cried, the French governess was wringing her
hands, and packing up her things. Tania and
Aniuta dared not stir, for they were the
scapegoats on whom all vented their tempers; and
the slightest wrong was treated as a crime. At
the same time, they felt a kind of curious interest
in what was going on, and in listening to the
quarrels amongst their elders, wondering what
would be the end of it all.

Ivan Sergejevitsch, who did not like
half-measures, made up his mind that the whole
educational system was to be thoroughly
reformed. The French governess got notice,
