missed her. At last Njania gave her a cup of
tea and took her to bed, where she soon fell into
a heavy sleep.
Next morning she felt dreadfully ashamed, and
thought she could never look anybody in the face
again. But things went better than she expected.
Olga had left in the evening, and had evidently
been generous enough not to complain of Tania.
Nobody scolded or scoffed at her; her uncle did
not show any change in his manner.
But, strange to say, from that day Tania’s
feelings towards him were quite changed. They
had no more chats in the evening, and he
returned to St. Petersburg shortly afterwards.
Though he came frequently, and was always very
kind to Tania, and though she continued to be
fond of him, the idolatrous attachment she had
felt towards him was gone for ever.
