Präst-ämbete (priestly office), which was used in previous
ordinals, has been restored since the year 1894. The Bishop of
Kalmar has also translated for the use of those members of
your Committee who have dealt with this subject the Ritual
of the Holy Supper and the Order of Confirmation, and has
called their attention to the fact that the three Creeds are
accepted as standards by the Church of Sweden, though only
the Apostles’ Creed is used in public worship.
In view of all this, your Committee are of opinion that the
question of the spiritual validity of the Holy Orders of the
Church of Sweden is undoubtedly matter for friendly conference
and explanation, and that certain lesser points should also be
considered e. g. as to the form in which the Diaconate is
retained, and as to the rite and minister of Confirmation.»
Lambethkonferensen sammanträdde detta år från 6 juli till
augusti 1908. I här berörda fråga fattades under § 74 följande
beslut:
»This Conference heartily thanks the Archbishop of Upsala
for his letter of friendly greeting, and for sending his honoured
colleague, the Bishop of Kalmar, to confer with its members
on the question of the etablishment of an alliance of some sort
between the Swedish and Anglican Churches. The Conference
respectfully desires the Archbishop of Canterbury to appoint a
Commission to correspond further with the Swedish Church
through the Archbishop of Upsala on the possibility and
conditions of such an alliance.»
Deltagare i biskopskonferensen beskriva den stund, då de
nära trehundra biskoparna under ärkebiskopens av Canterbury
ordförandeskap stående mottogo biskop Tottie under sitt
sam-samträde i Lambethpalatsets bibliotekssal, såsom en av de mest
högtidliga och betydelsefulla tilldragelserna i dessa mötens
historia. Den svenske biskopens vördnadsbjudande personlighet,
värdiga uppträdande och fulländade framställning gjorde, enligt
vad både offentligt och enskilt betygats, ett starkt intryck.
Kalmarbiskopens förtrogenhet med engelska språket och
engelska förhållanden och hans utrustning både i andligt och
lekamligt hänseende gjorde honom sällsynt väl skickad för denna
uppgift.
Påföljande år avsände ärkebiskopen av Canterbury en
delegation till svenska kyrkan, den enda gången som Englands
