MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN

of my engagements during my long stay in England, was such, that
I had often great difficulty in snatching a moment to write a hurried
line to my own wife, who was separate from me during great part
of my stay; and my other, especially my Swedish friends, had to
»take the will for the deed». — During my absence from Sweden
this year, the Lord has conducted me safely through journeyings to
the extent of 4.800 English or 800 Swedish miles, given me strength
to preach 71 times, deliver 55 missionary & similar addresses, in
28 different towns and 73 separate places of worship, and when in
connexion with this you remember that I was endeavouring to collect
means to build an English Chapel here, you will perceive that I
could not have much time for correspondence; •—- and since my
return on the 28 ult. I have been and am now so closely
occupied that I scarcely know how to get through, but I will not allow
my debt to you to be carried into a new year, although in my
insolvency (as regards time) you must be put off with a small
composition.

I am thankfull to find that at length the cause of Temperance
is likely to assume something like order, solidity and energy in this
land. The poor, illnursed, puny, rickety thing, called the
»Stockholms Nykterhets Förening», expired peacefully yesterday week.
A meeting was held, when the President proposed that the
association should be dissolved. I had previously arranged (in order to
avoid the appearance of a defeat; in order to deprive the
Newspapers of the opportunity of saying that the cause had been tried
& had failed) that the »Swenska N.S.» should receive the documents
of the other Society, which were to be handed over in order that
there might be hereafter only one central association. We hear
good news from various quarters. One man in Fahlun who took
last year 300 Fosterlandsvännen now requests 400. We are about
(I hope) to print a 2nd edition of Bairds excellent book, the King
having given us the copyright. Mr. Baird has sent me £ 20 towards
the expense of printing Temperance publications. May God in his
great mercy smile upon, aid, and render successful the labours of
His Servants in this important work.

I thank you most sincerely for the Book & appendix you kindly
sent me. O Lord, water & render fruitful the seed sown!

But I am compelled to break off, hoping you will forgive my
frail negligence & allow me still to retain a place in your friendship.

I am, Dear Sir,
Yours truly in the Gospel
Geo. Scott.

I will gladly allow you to write me in Swedish, if I may reply
in my own language.
