I-]O

Gumpert conveyed, but more especially do I thank you for the speedy
and valuable use you have made of »Mammon» and the specimens
of printing for the blind. It is most gratifying to place interesting
books where they will be thus employed for the benefit of many.
Most sincerely do I unite with you in the wish that »Mammon»
should be translated into Swedish. But — a suitable translator and
— a willing publisher may not be so easily found. You have I
presume seen »Britannia» by the same Author, and with pleasure
I now send you a copy of his great Missionary Sermon, which I
had the pleasure and privilege of hearing delivered, when more than
fifty Ministers of the Gospel were bathed in tears during nearly the
whole time. Oh! it was a season never to be forgotten. I feel
assured that ere you finish reading this extraordinary Sermon, you
will have resolved as soon as your other engagements permit, to
convert it into the nervous language of your own country; and who
can read such a sermon and remain unconcerned about the perishing
heathen. I send you also (to be returned at your leisure) one of
the most important books on the Mission question that has ever
appeared. I have arranged with the Editor of the Missions
Tidning about inserting a series of extracts which I shall render into
my Swedish & trouble him to rectify.

Pardon me that I trespass upon your time, by sending the
enclosed letter received lately from Paris. I know not what reply to
make to it, and know no one in Sweden from whom I might expect
a better advice than from yourself. This undertaking will depend
for its usefulness & success very much on the persons conducting it,
the Rev. Mr. Toase I know as a good & prudent man, but the
writer of the letter is not known by me.

I have read with great interest the recently published Report
of your Bible Society with the valuable address delivered by Dean
Bruhn. Is it not remarkable, is it not painful that your diocesan
Society really obtains (by Collections & Subscriptions) above 50 pet
more than the Swedish Bible Society, the whole Income of the latter
Society for 1837 arising from free contributions being only 764 Bco .
Something must be done to raise its disposable Funds or it will
shortly be able to accomplish nothing beyond selling copies at
full-cost price. I have already written to London requesting that 250
Bibles may be placed at your disposal for gratis distribution in
Bohus län.

Last Wednesday I attended the anniversary of the Swedish
Bible Society. A very interesting address was delivered by Dr.
Hag-bergs Son; but when only one address is delivered I question the
propriety of selecting so very youthful a speaker.

Having received letters from two different places in America
offering large aid for religious efforts directed to the benefit of
Seamen, I attended the last anniversary of »Stockholms Sjömanna
