HANDLINGAR TILL GEORGE SCOTTS VERKSAMHET I SVERIGE I 6 7

Sällskapet» of which I am a member, and in accordance with the
spirit of those letters, and as the most efficient means yet discovered
of promoting the best interests of seamen, proposed the fitting up
an old Ship as a »Floating Chapel.» I have often preached on
board such & with great comfort. I know not what regard may
be paid to my proposal here, but ere I write again to America
should like to know, how such a proposal would be estimated by
the Parent Society in Götheborg.

Our Misssionary year has just closed, 1 have not yet heard the
result, but considerably more than last year has been obtained. £ 400
has been voted to the four Societies which received similar
donations last year, besides £ 50 additional to the Wesleyan to repair
the Chapel at Bartholomews damaged by the Hurricane of Aug. 1837.
During the same fearful visitation a Lady who gratuitously
superintended the Negro School was killed, and the Missionary there
knew of no one who could take her place, while the Sunday School
in connexion with the Mission Chapel affords the only free
instruction for the Children on that Swedish Island. Considering it a duty
to care for these the Direction in Stockholm has proposed to the
Wesleyan Committee to grant a fixed annual sum, if that Committee
will select & send out a suitable Teacher.

Very good accounts continue to be received from our three
young friends in Lappland, and as Bishop Franzén is now here some
important arrangements regarding the best mode of prosecuting that
work will be made. — Our Societies in the Capital would soon
present a different appearence if we had a Bishop Wingård at the
head of them, or had we even a Pastor Rahmn as general
Secretary for them all. Rahmn we must have here, you do not need
him in Götheborg, and however pleasant it might be to have him
labouring under you, the cause of God in Stockholm really
requires him.

How very painful the accounts are from various parts of
Sweden ; surely the fact of hundreds perishing for lack of bread must
open the eyes of many to see the evil of consuming the bread of
the land to produce its bane. Oh I have thought, & very seriously
thought: — would that Bishop Wingård could now fulfill his long
cherished purpose of visiting England (even should it be as a beggar).
Most cheerfully would I accompany him and sure I am that help
for Bohuslän & Dalarne & Wermland too could there be obtained.
— Perhaps the thought is worth looking at —.

I almost fear you will be offended at the freedom with which
I write, but I feel assured that your Christian charity will forgive
me this time, and your Christian faithfulness forbid a repetition of
what is offensive. —

May the Lord our God, the God & Father of our Lord &
