hope that so grave a question would not be decided, before the
Prestestånd at the next diet should be heard over it; to help his
cause, a case was (got up &) hurried through the Consistory, of a
man (in Clara Parish) charged with illusing his wife, »because she
would not go to hear Pastor Scott». This was represented as proof
positive of the awfully injurious tendency of my Swedish Services
seeing they spread such discord in families etc. etc. — and in a
lengthy pro.men. delivered by W. to the King full of abusive
misrepresentations this silly story forms a leading text. Having
inquired quietly into the affair, I find that your friend Adjuncten
Bagge, who employs the man gives him the best possible character
for industry, economy, peacefulness etc. but says he has unfortunately
a shrew of a wife, who torments him beyond bearing.
I am told that Heurlin sent by the King, laboured for two
hours to convince W. of the impropriety and danger of earring such
a question to the stormy discussions of a Diet, but W. was not to
be convinced, and made use of such language that H., I
understand, declares, had he not been on the Kings errand, he would
have slapped the door in W:s face and never again crossed his
treshold.
Hearing however that H. M. was likely to yield to W.’s mode
of getting rid of a troublesome question, I felt it my duty to write
a very respectful but very plain letter, giving all the dates etc., and
expressing an anxiety to know how I was to account to my friends
in England for the long delay etc. — — This was read to H. M.
and an order dispatched instantly to Bishop H. to have the case
brought up for decision. And last friday — Hartmansdorff having
been removed in so remarkable a way — W.’s party had no agent
in the Council, and while 1 understand that infatuated Prelate was
busilly engaged cooking some new opposition, the matter was brought
forward & settled. And the counsel of Achitophel turned to
foolishness. I feel perfect confidence in writing you all particulars
being assured you will excuse my freedom, &: keep to yourself what
ought not to be known.
By this post I write Mr. Blackwood about the plans, I am
sure he would be most happy to shew them ycu, when they are
ready, and I shall be very glad to have the erection placed in the
hands of a Götheborgare.
I have not yet heard of my Sister’s arrival, but expect daily a
letter. May I trouble you to let friend Dahl know as much of this
as you deem prudent. Téll him that Mr. Elder whom he saw at
Tod’s and with whom I thought of sending my sister, committed
suicide by hanging himself in his Cabin, after he vainly endeavoured
