I gave you on this subject had quite escaped your memory, and
that in consequence of a prejudice founded or unfounded, against
the Wesleyan Methodist Conference, you took an erroneous view of
the peculiar circumstances of this proposed Chapel.
You seem highly satisfied with what has been done, I am very
far from being so. As regards the fund it is neither more nor less
safe than before, in that respect the Newspaper interference has
effected just nothing. But I hate disunion, and such a relation as
that in which we at present stand to each other is very different
from what I wish to be the case. God knows I would as much as
lieth in me live peacably with all men. And now that the first
burst of feeling is over, I can conscientiously say there is nothing
in my heart contrary to peace with all men.
As regards »annihilating» me etc. you know well, that I have
been honestly, disinterestedly, zealously labouring to do good to my
fellow-sinners here for upwards of 8 years, you know well that
in this I have pursued the most antisectarian course. 1 believe you
allow also, that good to no inconsiderable extent has resulted from
my exertions in a variety of ways. May I not then in greater honour
to yourself, consider your forbearing to annihilate me, supposing you
had the power of doing so, as the evidence of a Christian regard,
not for my poor person, but for the somewhat important agency
kept in operation by Gods blessing on my instrumentality. Whatever
may be the state of the case as regards »Modern Methodism» in
the general, I am sure the Wesleyan Mission in Stockholm will ever
stand out as a perhaps unparalelled specimen of genuine Catholicity;
and you have, I am conscious, too much good sense, & religious
feeling to allow your sentiments regarding the Wesleyan Conference
to operate in a way detrimental to an unassuming and really useful
work here, merely because it happens to be connected with that
Conference. If you had exerted the power of which you suppose
yourself possessed and annihilated me, or rather my work here, a wound
would have been inflicted on many Swedish unoffending souls, but
the stroke would not have touched the Conference, and my
liberation would have been effected; for be assured I would not for the
gratification of private feeling remain here, was I not persuaded that
my duty to God & my fellowmen demands it. Misunderstand not
this communication, it is honestly wellmeant, & most heartily do I
reciprocate your expressions of interest for the domestic circle. May
we & ours ever walk in the light of Gods countenance & we shall
not do wrong, nor lack happiness.
