MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN

27. Till P. Wieselgren.

Stockholm, June 2. 1840.

My dear Brother,

I have delayed replying to yours of the 5 th May, in daily
expectation of receiving an answer from Baird stating whether & when
we may expect him. But I can wait no longer especially as you
ought to know, how it stands with the Jönköpingsmötet.
Landshöfdingen Bergenstråhle cannot be there, Mr. Landegren is also
likely to leave Jönköping for some months, Hartmansdorff cannot
leave the Diet, and the latter told me the other day, that no
meeting cotild take place. So much for that side, but there are others,
and among them Thomander, who think that a meeting must and
shall take place, that what has once been promised, and is now
expected by many, ought to be kept and religiously observed.

Our friend Owen had by last post a letter from Mr. Rinman
Fahlun, stating that he and several others intended to be present
at the meeting, and making inquiry about steam Boats etc. Surely
the cause must suffer if no meeting is held. And if friends in
Jönköping should be afraid, that no meeting could take place there,
how would it do, to have it in the neighbourhood (as at Madesjö)
say at Barnarp, Prosten Hallenberg’s (1 mile from Jön:g), he is a
zealous Temperance friend, and might like such a meeting in his
parish. By such an arrangement the authorities at Jönk:g could not
be offended, and such as come there for a Temperance meeting,
would not be disappointed. Think of this — and what thou doest
do quickly & decisively. Unless you manage the matter I fear
nothing can be done from this place. Our Direction won’t move
in the matter against the opinions of H. & B.

As to time & plan — it occurs to me, that the best way for
Stockholm friends, is to take Steamer to Norrköping, returning same
way. Suppose that we left on Wednesday the ist July, reached
Linköping same night and Jönköping Thursday 2nd, we could be
there or in the neighbourhood Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and leave
011 Monday the 6th, getting to Linköping same night, and to
Norrköping next morning, where a Temperance meeting might be
arranged (nothing has as yet been done there) for the same day, and
the party be again in Stockholm by 7 P. M. on Wednesday the
8th. —

The three days, 3rd, — 4th, 5th, — at Jön:g would afford
abundant time for meetings, discussions etc. etc.

Do — if possible, let me hear your ultimatum before our
Directors meeting Saturday week the 13th, that I may inform them
