härom, men då jag är oviss om brefvet skulle i tid träffa honom,
då han endast såsom resande är Stockholmsbo, så har jag tagit mitt
parti att heldre tillskrifva dig. Orsaken hvarföre jag är synnerligen
angelägen att Wieselgren stadgar sin opinion på sätt nämnt är, är
en viss farhåga för Erkebiskopens åsigt, sedan jag läst hans
cirklade tal vid stora sammankomsten i våhras, helst han der på flere
ställen visar sig minst sagt försigtig och rädd. Jag tänker likväl att
utom Wieselgren äfven Thomander skall blifva honom en motvigt.
Helsa den så hjertligt käre Brodern Wieselgren på det
innerligaste och likaså Brodern Owen! Du har väl fått mitt sista bref?
Och äfven Wieselgren ett bref addresserat på Stockholm?

32. Till William A. Hallock:
When, about four years ago, Mr. Baird made his first visit to
Sweden, many of our benevolent efforts were in a languishing state.
The Temperance Societies formed in 1830 and 31 were all but
dissolved, and the few which still remained at their post much
discouraged an ready to faint in their minds. I cannot but look upon
our friend’s arrival here at that juncture, as most providential; as
an illustration of the good old saying »Man’s extremity is God’s
opportunity». During his short residence here, he had the
opportunity of conversing not only with his majesty the king, the prince
and princess royal, but also with several men of rank and influence,
who listened with attention to his calm and clear statements. The
gracious act of the king, in ordering a Swedish translation of »Baird’s
History of Temperance Societies» to be made, and presenting, at
his own expense, a copy of the book to every parish in this
kingdom, was a manifest proof that the Lord knoweth hearts of kings;
for it would be quite impossible to give you any adequate idea of
the effect produced by the circulation throughout the land of this
book. As one of the Secretaries of the Swedish Temperance Society,
I have the means of knowing, that in almost every instance where
zealous temperance efforts have been commenced in the country,
»Baird’s book» has been cited as the moving instrument. »Baird’s
