Lutheran Clergyman to break the ice here and enter a Methodist
Pulpit, to advocate from thence the cause of our common Saviour;
may the noble example be often followed, and richly crowned
with the mighty blessing of Him who said, »there shall be one fold
and one Shepherd».

Excuse kindly my thus trespassing upon you

Revered friend in the Lord,

The reason of my following you with my letter to Upsala will
be explained, when I mention that since I wrote the enclosed, Dr
Thomander has informed me, you had expressed to him a doubt as
to the propriety of his preaching in the English Chapel, and a fear
that it might possibly involve me in new difficulties, and that in
consequence Dr T. though quite willing to keep his promise, would
not take a step which might lessen your friendship for me. Not
having anticipated any such difficulty I can scarcely think he has
rightly understood you, or fully explained his motive & object in
undertaking the service in question. Suffer me then to mention,
that when dining with Mr. Baird at Dr T.’s 2 months ago, the
latter voluntarily and unasked expressed his willingness to assist at
the opening of the Chapel, if more than one was to be engaged.
I stated openly the nature of & reasons for my communication to
Rahmn, and the gratitude I felt that neither the ArchBishop nor
the Bishop of Götheborg had discouraged the application, adding:
»if Rahmn cannot come I shall not forget your kind offer». —
When therefore Rahmn was hindered I as a matter of course
resorted again to Dr T. telling him that Pastor Brandell had also
engaged to minister. (I ought certainly to have taken your kind
counsel first, but be assured this was no intentional neglect, and
forgive what appears to be so.) Dr T. accepted the invitation just
because he, having diligently inquired into the whole affair, was
fully persuaded in his own mind that no attempt foreign to the true
interests of the Swedish Church was thought of, and he wished to
say so publicly, at once to put an end to mere prejudice, and so
