symbol of the body on that point states among other thus: »There
is not one Scripture from the beginning of Genesis to the end of
Revelation, that denies this doctrine either negatively by saying that
he did not die for all; or affirmatively by saying that he died only
for some. — He himself commanded, that the Gospel should be
preached to every creature, he calleth all men everywhere to repent
etc». This is the strain in which all our theological writings, and
most secret documents treat this question; in this then you perceive
that you are under some misinformation. The German translator of
the Methodist work I mentioned in my last as soon to appear in
Swedish, just states that being a Calvinist he differs entirely from
Mr. Wesley in doctrine, though he cannot but admire his zeal.

2nd where you refer to two Methodist Chapels standing side
by side in Norfolk street, Sheffield. I have preached in Corner St.
Chapel, in two others in Sheffield, and also in Norfolk St. Methodist
Chapel. In the immediate vicinity of the latter I did perceive
another like in form and enquired to what body it belonged, when I
learned that it was a calvinistic Independant, or Congregationalist
Chapel. Now these distinctions may appear trifling as regards the
general question but they are important to me, as called to bear the
brunt of all that objected to Methodism, and as having enough to
answer for as regards my own body, without having the real or
supposed failings of some dozen other denominations into the bargain.

Two or three other difficulties lie in the way of making out
the marvellous secret Jesuitical and overthrowing influence of the
Wesleyan body. As the noncontinuity of the head of the body; all
the affairs of Methodism are under the administration of a President,
or if you will Pope, for he is supreme within the circle of the laws;
here is a concentration of power great indeed, but the reigns only
one year, cannot resume his office till after the lapse of 8, and
therefore 8 different Presidents elected by at least 400 Preachers
must have exactly the same views, to carry out any undermining
process! — The thing is preposterous. Apply the fact to Sweden.
Dr. Townley was President when I was sent here, if he who
personally during a visit to my native place Edinburgh selected me
for this station had any secret object in view, then his sentiments
&: plans must have entered into G. Morley, G. Marsden, R. Newton,
R. Treffry, J. Taylor, R. Reece, Dr. Bunting, E. Grindrod, T.
Jackson, T. Lessey, and all these must have harmoniously supported his
(said to be) insidious & unrighteous purposes. The President & the
Conference are the only concentrated powers in Methodism. The
former changes every year, the latter meet once a year, does not,
by any means consist always of the same parties, and having been
present once & again I can assure you, there is such wide spread
and openly professed difference of opinion on political matters that
any combined secret political movement is an utter impossibility. In
