in the Swedish »Stats Tidning» the ordeal you have had again to
go through in Sweden. — I should be wanting in feeling if I were
not to express to you my sincere sympathy with your situation, and
I can scarcely suppress indignation at the ungrateful conduct of the
people of Stockholm towards you. However take comfort dear
friend, such has been the experience of all true followers of the
Lamb of God. — They dwell amongst wolves (and some of them
in sheeps skins) who threaten to make an end of them at once.
But it is the I.ords power that does not suffer them to be touched,
and He will preserve His own to the end, and put all their
enemies to shame. Ingratitude is the worlds reward, and if the
Swedish nation should never have their eyes opened to see the great
benefits you as an individual have to the utmost of your strength
in a series of years and in a variety of the most important matters
rendered to that benighted country, be of good cheer, it is all well
known by Him whom you serve and who ruleth over all nations. —
Selflove and pride blinds the eyes of both Clergy and people in
these foreign Countries, that they will not come down to a true
insight of their sinful infidel state. They are not aware that they are
blind, poor and naked, and puffed up in their conceit they despise
the pious efforts that are made for their relieve out of such
miserable captivity. Do not be shaken in your confidence and do not
relax in your endeavours to carry on the work of the Lord, for
your reward is sure with Him, who sent you to that place and has
hitherto so eminently blessed your exertions. If it was not the
case, Satan would not kick up so great a noise, nor be so much
alarmed. The present slander and reviling is just the seal of the
genuineness of your ministry. Do not therefore be discouraged,
but go on with renewed vigor, to be spent if it should be the Lords
will, in that sore conflict that has been set up against you. — But
I doubt not you will ultimately succeed. It is a very general
experience amongst the servants of Christ, that sufferings must go
before victory, and the Lord in great wisdom has ordered it so, that
the creature may not be elated but ascribe all honor and glory to
Him who is mighty in the weak and gives them strength and
victory.
I know no more of the case than what was in the »Stats
Tidning» about the end of last month, and fully subscribe what you
have said about their church. It is a body without life, same as
in this Country, and I truly believe that the Lord in His own time
will shatter to pieces these lifeless forms to gather out of them a
people of His own who will serve Him, for it is precisely as it
was in the Prophets time when people cried: here is the temple of
the Lord, here is the temple of the Lord! for each party believe
their’s is the right Church and want everybody to conform to it.
Gossner at Berlin has a similar combat to fight with those who call
