of widespreading politico hierarchical plans, and the whole tendency
of the Methodist system is now before us. On the 17 th this
paper was able to announce with evident delight that a famed
Mimic and Theater manager was getting up a piece called the Jesuit
in which Scott should figure as the principal character, and on its
appearance March 12th it is said the success of the piece must be
attributed to the general and strong feeling against Jesuitism in any
form which prevails.
Noticing the Missionary’s advertisement subsequent to the riot
the Editor says: »Scott has suspended his services till after Easter,
this will give opportunity to the authorities to consult what is best
to be done to prevent further scandal. A similar state of things
existed in the time of John 3rd in connexion with Laurentius or
Klosterlasse; his jesuitical proceedings led to an uproar, and
ultimately his removal, the same course now would restore quietness. On
the 24th March the law of 1781 is noticed as being still in force,
and it is declared that Scott ought not to be protected because he
does not belong to any National Church but is only the Agent of
a voluntary association nowhere acknowledged as a Church. »It is
nothing the law can touch or object to, the Editor adds, it is the
spiritual tyranny of the system, the disturbing the peace of families
and the like, in a word proceedings which while they are fatally
dangerous can only be reached by the power of public opinion.»
The finishing stroke however was given on the ist April by
an article concluding thus: »The Prelates protect Methodism —
why? Because the proper definition of Methodism is, a popish
reality under the name and semblance of protestantism. The
dissemination of this religious madness among the people is the best
means of keeping them under an unconstitutional exercise of power.
This plan to encourage Methodism has not fully succeeded and it
may be well to take care. During the time of John 3rd the famed
Klosterlasse had no better success than his reappearance Scott has
now. The then reigning branch of the Royal house was rendered
so hateful by the favour shewn this man, that the son of John 3rd
must needs resign his lawful throne. This was not the design but
it was the result of the protection afforded Klosterlasse, and it would
appear that the protectors of Scott design a repetition of the fate
of Sigismund».
On the 6th it is said: If the question be Scott’s removal,
it is not effected because he has failed against the rules of the
Conference, but because he has been only too faithful to that
corporation and merited the thanks and rewards of the Conference.
Attempts were frequently made by various parties, to obtain the
insertion in these papers of articles in favour of truth and
righteousness, but not a line would be admitted, not even as paid
advertisements. Another paper the »Swedish Bee» a conservative and Church
