HANDLINGAR TILL GEORGE SCOTTS VERKSAMHET I SVERIGE I 6 7

carricaturist comes with his in Sweden new and therefore more
effective mode of appeal, and the people are then ready to transfer
to action what they have read or seen. This [is] specially true as
regards the last outrage, first a series of most violent attacks on
Scott, then on Methodism generally and finally on the services in
the English Church. When by falsehoods, misrepresentations,
romances, anecdotes & the like, public indignation was sufficiently
aroused, the Carricature appears collecting in one disgraceful dark
representation the combined effect of the previous libels; the
excitement is increased by the theatrical performance, evidently a part of
the plan, as the Aftonblad knew and announced the preparation of
the piece three weeks before it came out, and all being ready,
Crusenstolpe the originator of such modes of expressing opinion
comes forth and gives the signal complaining that the Swedish
community, »allowed this hypocritical fanatic to walk among them
unpunished, listening to his denunciations against his opponents if not
without squeamishness, at least without loud demonstrations of
righteous wrath». All was now in order, and a few days after
the appearance of this exhortation the outrage took place. Three
days afterwards the Bee in proof that no love for Methodism or
Scott had dictated the preceding articles declared: »Scott in our
opinion cannot as matters now stand, retain his liberty of preaching,

separated from that of Methodism. But he should not be sent
away as a concession to the Radical press.»

On the 5th of April Mr. Owen endeavoured in the Bee to
answer the question how shall we get Mr. Scott away? remarking
that all seemed agreed he must go, though when it was asked
»why what evil hath he done?» the only reply was a more loudly
vociferated: »away with him». Mr. O. thought S. must be very
faultless or a consummate deceiver, that so small a harvest of
founded charges against him could be reaped, after the labour of
eleven years in sowing what they call seeds of mischief. Mr. O.
cites the remark of one in Stockholm as very correct: »Scott
appears just as he is, and hence our Stockholm people cannot
comprehend him», and as it appeared that neither by concession nor
law it was easy to remove Scott, Mr. O. offers an opportunity, and
engages to have him taken away at once, if his adversaries can
prove that he has uttered a single falsehood, seeing such a charge
substantiated before the Conference would result in Scott’s removal,
and deprive him at the same time of the confidence of the many in
Stockholm who only love him the more, the more he is persecuted.
Mr. O. declares his own respect for S. increased during the last
four months, but that if guilty of "/■<» part of the charges prefer-
