MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN

formance night after night did more than anything else to exasperate
the mob, though many of the more respectable inhabitants felt
disgusted at the wicked proceeding. Every service was now painful,
by the annoyances always occurring, and the evident tendency to
riot especially on the Sabbath evenings; the Chapel having often
the appearance of a public market rather than a Sanctuary of God,
while it was useless to attempt severe reproof as matters would only
be rendered worse thereby. And yet there was pleasure with this
painfulness, arising from the remarkable divine aid afforded in
faithfully proclaiming the truth as it is in Jesus, the increasing
attendance of respectable hearers, and the constant assurances that a
personal attendance at the Chapel at once removed prejudice, and
exposed the unreasonableness of the public papers, while not a few
were brought to a saving knowledge of the truth in troublous times,
so that there was good reason to expect that ere long the irritation
prevailing, would give way before the force of simple truth. The
enemy knew this well, and therefore made haste to bring matters
to a crisis.

On the 13th March the Missionary was sent for by the Deputy
Governor, (General Möllerhjelm being laid aside by affliction) who

The Deputy consented to the truth of this, but appeared greatly
agitated and most undecided in his manner; this was in part
accounted for, by the fact that the 13th of March being the
anniversary of the Revolution of 1809, is looked on by the Authorities
as an anxious day, and the Aftonblad having the previous evening
called attention to it in a most marked manner, some disturbance
was feared to commence which it was thought the unpopular service
at the Methodist Chapel would give good occasion. On the whole
it was evident to the Missionary that any thing like the energetic
protection afforded by General Möllerhjelm was not to be expected
from this Deputy.

The 20th March (Palm Sunday) the crowd was very great at
the Swedish service, during the singing of the first Hymn, evident
indications of a determination to disturb the service appeared, but
were more unequivocal during the second hymn, and the Preacher
said a few words to promote order before taking his text. The
sermon was not far advanced when a loud shout or hurrah was
heard from the outside, and followed by all kinds of noises, so that
the preacher’s voice was drowned; on regaining a hearing he
endeavoured to disconnect the disturbers within the walls from those
without, and succeeded beyond his expectations; but the determination
